Uzbekistan is blessed with amazing architecture. Its ancient cities are awash with stunning turquoise domed mosques and towering minarets. The many fine museums display the incredible history from the days of Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great to its more recent history with the former Soviet Union.
In Tashkent we ride the metro, visit the Museum of Applied Arts and the Hastim Imam Complex and explore Chorsu Bazaar. The highs peed train then brings us to legendary Samarkand where we discover its most celebrated sights. Highlights include the wonderful Shah-I-Zinda complex and the fabulous Registan. We also make a side trip to World Heritage-listed Shahrisabz and explore the nearby village of Urgu, famous for it fabulous local market and at Konigil we learn the ancient technique of silk paper making.
Alongside Samarkand, Bukhara is one of the great cities of central Asia and here we have two action packed days to see its many sites and also to make our own discoveries. We then travel across the desert steppe to Khiva, once a slave-trading Khanate. Khiva is the most intact and homogeneous of our three ancient cities. We enjoy some stunning vernacular architecture, exploring mosques, madrasas and mausoleums. We fly from nearby Urgench to Tashkent for our final night and to the end of our Central Asian adventure.
