This adventure across old Persia allows you to experience the rich history, art, traditions, customs and religions of this ancient land. Iran is a truly amazing country and with Byroads you’ll discover a fascinating people who are well educated, courteous and incredibly welcoming.
In Tehran we visit some of the city’s fine museums before flying south to the garden city of Shiraz. We take in the major sights including the Vakil Bazaar and make a side-trip to the great ruins of Persepolis. Further east we stop at the tomb of Cyrus the Great and then continue via Abarqu to Yazd Province. We spend 3 days exploring, heading off the beaten track to see little-visited mud brick citadels, gardens, merchant homes and ancient villages. Yazd is a real highlight.
Travelling north to Meybod, we visit the fortress before continuing to Isfahan, the ‘jewel in the crown’. Ample time here to see the many wonderful sights including the magnificent Naksh-e Jahan Square, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Imam Mosque, the Museum of Decorative Arts and more.
Near Isfahan we wander the elegant 14th century mosque at Natanz and then spend a night in the village of Abyaneh. Further north is Kashan, celebrated for its fine ceramic production. Here we see two magnificent nineteenth century Qajar houses as well as the Bagh-e Tarikhi-ye Fin Garden. Our journey ends back in Tehran.
